Get the Open-Source advantage
Over the last few years, the adoption of open-source software in the business world has been on the rise. There are a lot of reasons for this:
Security
It seems that every two week we're hearing about a new worm or virus that's running rampant around offices everywhere. And this is even the case where anti-virus software is being used, since new viruses spread faster than new virus definitions. Trouble with your Internet Explorer? Every day there seems to be a new exploit for that one. IIS? Yeah, right.
It's time to get off the exploit/patch treadmill. Open source software provides more secure servers and browsers. First, there's less security holes to begin with, and second, exploit writers target Windows system far more often that any other. By integrating open source systems and software into your computers, you can obviate the need to patch your systems every other week and concentrate on providing service to your customers.
Control
Your documents are the most important things you produce and store on your computer system, whether your PC at home or on the server in the office. So why are they almost always locked up in some propriety data format? Few of the big software companies publish the formats they use for your data. So you need their software to access your data. And with every year they change the format just that little bit, so you are forced to upgrade your software to keep up. Sound familiar? Of course it is.
In the open-source world, not only are the document formats published and open, but the code of the program reading them is available as well. There's no risk of vendor lock-in.
Cost
Most open-source software is entirely free. Not only cost-wise but free of cumbersome licensing restrictions and connection limitations. In many cases, support is available for a fee, and there's also large communities of users who can help with most concievables problems.
I am an open-source enthusiant and am familiar with most of the current flavors of Unix/Linux currently available and can help your organization take advantage of the volumes of useful, high-quality and reliable software.
